Tender or Docked?
Docked at the Portas do Mar terminal. You walk off along the seafront promenade into Ponta Delgada in about 10 minutes.
How to Get Into Town
Town is a 10-minute seafront walk, free. Everything else on the island is a taxi, rental, or tour from the pier.
Main Attractions
Crater lakes, a geothermal valley, and whales. Sete Cidades, Furnas, and a whale-watching trip are the headline options, with a walkable town by the pier.
How Much Time You Need
A full day rewards you. The best scenery is 30-50 minutes out, so give yourself time to reach it and return.
Keep in Mind
Public buses are too sparse for a cruise day. Scheduled routes run only a couple of times daily, so plan a taxi, rental, or tour.
Safety & Comfort
Very safe and relaxed. Sao Miguel is a calm Portuguese island with little crime aimed at visitors.

We just rented a little car at the port and did Sete Cidades ourselves. Easy driving, good roads, and the view from Vista do Rei was worth the whole stop. Way cheaper than the ship tour for two of us and no waiting around.
shared taxi to sete cidades, 12 euro each way, driver waited 40 mins at the top. clouds rolled in halfway through so we only half saw the lakes but thats the azores for you. back at the ship by 1
Tried to do it on the public bus and honestly wouldnt again. Two buses a day, we got out to Sete Cidades fine but the timing back was so tight I spent the afternoon stressed. Just get a taxi or rent a car.
Stayed in town, walked the cobbled streets, sat with a coffee by those old city gates. The interior looked lovely but the drives sounded long for us. Ponta Delgada itself was plenty for a gentle day.
