Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Funchal
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Cable car up, toboggan down, Old Town for lunch: a genuinely complete port day.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked, within a 15-20 minute walk of the Old Town. Ships berth at the Port of Funchal along the central waterfront, one of the most convenient terminals in southern Europe.
How to Get Into Town
Zona Velha (Old Town) is a flat 15-20 minute walk east along the waterfront. The cable car base is at the eastern edge of the Old Town. Blandy's Wine Lodge is in the center, about 20 minutes on foot from the pier.
Main Attractions
The cable car and toboggan route is Funchal's most famous experience. Blandy's Wine Lodge, the oldest Madeira wine house in the city, is about a 20-minute walk from the pier.
How Much Time You Need
Cable car + Monte Palace + toboggan + lunch takes 5-6 hours. That still leaves time for the Old Town before or after.
Keep in Mind
The Monte Toboggan does not run on Sundays. If your port call is on a Sunday, the toboggan will be closed. Plan the cable car for Monte visit and adjust.
Safety & Comfort
Funchal is one of the safest cruise ports in the Atlantic. Street crime is minimal and the city is well set up for visitors at all experience levels.

We kept mostly to the flat and it worked out beautifully. The waterfront promenade, Blandy's courtyard, the botanical garden café. Back at the ship by 2pm feeling like we'd had a proper morning. Funchal rewards the slow pace.
Blandy's wine lodge was the highlight of my whole cruise. The guide really knew her stuff; she covered the wine families, the volcanic geology, the trade routes, all of it. €18 for an hour that good is a steal.
We came on a Sunday and the toboggan was closed. The ship's newsletter hadn't mentioned it. We'd specifically wanted to do it. Did the cable car and Monte Palace instead, which were both excellent, but I'd have planned differently if I'd known.
Did the full circuit: walked to the cable car, up to Monte, walked through the garden, toboggan down, taxi back to town, lunch at a little place in Zona Velha, then wandered the painted doors. Perfect day. Got back to the ship with 45 minutes to spare.
The toboggan was the kids' favourite thing on the whole cruise. My 15-year-old said it was the best 10 minutes he could remember. The price per person feels steep but there's nothing else like it.
