Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Mindelo
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Walk the town, agree taxi fares first, skip the tight Santo Antão ferry.
Tender or Docked?
Docked at Porto Grande, a 10-15 min walk from the main square. Taxis wait at the gate for anything beyond town.
How to Get Into Town
The town is a free 10-15 min walk. Taxis at the gate run to Monte Verde for around €12 each way.
Main Attractions
The colonial town center, live music, and Monte Verde views are the draws. Most of it is a walk; the mountain is a taxi.
How Much Time You Need
3-4 hours covers the town and a taxi up Monte Verde. The beach or a longer tour fills a full call.
Keep in Mind
Agree every taxi fare before you get in. There are no meters, so set the price and any wait time up front.
Safety & Comfort
Calm and welcoming, with normal traveler awareness needed. Petty theft is the main thing to guard against.

walked into town, wandered the pink square and the market, had a beer while a guy played guitar in the corner. didnt do the mountain or anything, just soaked up the vibe. lovely little place.
Ended up chatting with a taxi driver for half an hour about Cesaria Evora, he grew up two streets from her. Never made it to the beach, just talked and walked. That was the whole day and it was perfect.
Hot going on the cobbles by midday and not much shade. We found a little cafe on the square, sat with a cold drink, and watched the town drift past for an hour. Suited us just fine at our age.
We really wanted the Santo Antao ferry but the timings were too tight and the crew warned us off it. Stood on the harbour looking across at those green peaks feeling like we were missing the best bit. Missing the ship just wasnt worth the gamble.
