Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Leixoes
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Take the metro in; Ribeira and the wine lodges fill a full day.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at Leixoes terminal in Matosinhos. A free shuttle runs from the pier to the port gate; walking the pier itself is not permitted.
How to Get Into Town
Metro Line A (Blue) from Matosinhos Sul: 30 min to Porto city center, ~€2 each way. Walk 5-15 min from the port gate to the station, then ride direct to Trindade, the heart of the historic center.
Main Attractions
Ribeira is Porto's UNESCO waterfront district. Vila Nova de Gaia's wine lodges are directly across the river, and the Dom Luis I Bridge connects them at both deck levels.
How Much Time You Need
A 9-10 hour call covers Ribeira, a wine lodge, and Livraria Lello. Shorter calls require choosing between the two banks of the Douro.
Keep in Mind
Livraria Lello timed-entry slots sell out days in advance in summer. Book online at livrarialello.pt before the cruise, not the morning of your port call.
Safety & Comfort
Porto is safe and one of Portugal's most visitor-friendly cities. Standard urban awareness in crowded tourist areas applies.

I had only 7 hours and skipped everything that needed booking. Just walked from the metro to Sao Bento station, stood in the middle of the hall looking at those tiles for about twenty minutes, then wandered down to Ribeira for lunch. That alone made the port day.
Did the metro into Porto and it was completely fine. The station is a short walk from the port gate, trains came every few minutes, and we were in the city center in half an hour. No idea why anyone would spend €25 each on a taxi.
Clerigos Tower was our kids' highlight of the trip. They raced each other up the 240 steps and were delighted with themselves at the top. The view was excellent. My legs ached for two days after. Worth it.
We forgot to book Livraria Lello in advance. Every slot was sold out by the time we got there. We stood outside and looked through the door and that was that. It's a genuinely beautiful building and I'm still annoyed we missed it. Book before you go.
The hop-on-hop-off bus was worth it for us because we didn't want to deal with the metro. It picked up at the port and dropped us at each stop. More expensive but we were tired and it meant we didn't have to think. Each to their own.
We spent the afternoon in Gaia at the Sandeman cellar. They had an English-speaking guide, the cellar itself was cool and beautiful, and the port at the end was genuinely good. €22 each. The ship's wine excursion was €70. Same river, same wine, very different price.
