Tender or Docked?
Always tendered, but into the middle of town. The 10-15 minute tender lands at Kailua Pier, steps from Ali'i Drive's shops, sites, and restaurants.
How to Get Into Town
You are already in town: the tender lands on Ali'i Drive. The village core is a flat walk, and the free hourly Kona Trolley reaches the snorkel beach south of town.
Main Attractions
The walkable village is the easy win, with Kona coffee farms, Kealakekua snorkeling, and the Place of Refuge as add-ons if you have transport.
How Much Time You Need
A half day covers the village; a full 8-9 hour call adds a snorkel tour or a drive south.
Keep in Mind
The village is a walk-off win, but the best snorkeling needs a boat. Book any tour before the cruise day.
Safety & Comfort
Kona is very safe and about as easy as tender ports get, with the tender itself being the main timing factor.

Did the Body Glove snorkel cruise to Kealakekua and it was the highlight of the whole trip. Boat left the pier around 8:30, back by noon, then we still had time for lunch in the village. The water at the monument is unreal.
Rented a car and drove down to the place of refuge, which is genuinely worth it, then hit a coffee farm on the way back. But the taxi to the airport to get the car ate into the morning. If I did it again for a short stop I might just stay in town.
About a mile into the hike down to the captain cook monument, sweat pouring off us and not a scrap of shade anywhere, we just looked at each other and turned around. Never even made it to the water. Sat in the shade back in the village feeling pretty defeated.
Tender was smooth both ways. We just took the free trolley down to Kahaluu beach, watched the turtles from the sand, and came back. Slow and lovely. My only gripe was the tender line got long around 3 so we went back a bit early.
