Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Quebec City
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Take the funicular up; the walled city is mostly free to walk.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at the Quai 22 cruise terminal in the Lower Town. You step off the gangway into the heart of Old Quebec.
How to Get Into Town
Ships dock inside the Old City; Petit Champlain is a 5-minute walk and the funicular to Upper Town costs ~$5 CAD. No transfers needed.
Main Attractions
The Château Frontenac and the Dufferin Terrace are the heart of Old Quebec; the views over the St. Lawrence from the terrace are the kind you come back for. The Plains of Abraham, where French and British forces fought in 1759, is a quiet park 15 minutes away on foot.
How Much Time You Need
6+ hours is ideal for both the Upper and Lower Town. Even 4 hours gives you the essential experience.
Keep in Mind
Quebec City is primarily French-speaking. Signs, menus, and first greetings are in French; English is understood in tourist areas but not assumed.
Safety & Comfort
Quebec City is one of the safest cities in Canada. Very low crime, and the historic district is well-patrolled and tourist-friendly.

Montmorency Falls with a taxi took 20 minutes each way and cost $30 CAD. The falls are higher than Niagara and you walk across a suspension bridge right over the top of them. Free park entry. The gondola to the lookout is $14 and worth it. We were back on the ship well within 90 minutes of all-aboard.
The funicular was a revelation — $5 CAD and you glide up in a glass car looking straight at the Chateau Frontenac. I rode it up and down twice just to take it in. Petit Champlain at the bottom is touristy but genuinely charming, especially early in the morning before the shops open fully.
Walked the full circuit of the city walls in the morning before the crowds arrived. That alone took two hours and was worth every minute. The cannon mounts, the gates, the views over the river. The ship excursion was sitting on a bus watching the same things from a window.
