Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Sitka
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Reserve your free shuttle return slot before leaving the terminal building.
Tender or Docked?
Varies by ship. Most major cruise lines dock at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, about 5 miles from downtown; a free shuttle runs to town but requires a reservation.
How to Get Into Town
Free shuttle to downtown: 10-15 min, no fare. Reservation required; book at the terminal or at sitkadock.com before you arrive.
Main Attractions
Bald eagles up close at the Raptor Center, ancient totems in a rainforest, and orphaned bears at a rescue sanctuary. Sitka delivers genuine wildlife encounters without needing to book an expensive guided tour.
How Much Time You Need
7+ hours ideal. A shorter call works for a totem walk and downtown stroll; combining the Raptor Center and Fortress of the Bear needs a full day.
Keep in Mind
Shuttle reservations can fill up. On multi-ship days, the free terminal shuttle runs out of reserved slots quickly; book at sitkadock.com before leaving the ship.
Safety & Comfort
Very safe, well-organized port. Sitka is one of Alaska's most cruise-friendly destinations, with clear signage and staff who know the cruise-day routine.

Wanted to see the bears but didn't know about the advance booking thing. By the time we got a taxi out to Fortress of the Bear, they were full for timed entry and turned us away at the gate. Ended up back in town which was fine, but I was annoyed at myself. Check the fortressofthebear.org calendar before you go.
We booked our shuttle return slot the moment we stepped off the gangway. My husband thought I was being overly cautious. By the time we came back from the totem park at 2pm, there was a long standby line. Glad we had our slot locked in.
honestly just walked the totem park and sat by the water for most of the afternoon. the forest is completely quiet once you're past the first few poles. didn't do any of the wildlife places. no regrets.
Brought my boys, 8 and 11. The Raptor Center was the clear win of the whole cruise. We got there early and had the flight center practically to ourselves. By the time we left an hour and a half later there was a big group coming in. The kids haven't stopped talking about the bald eagle that flew about a foot over their heads.
Did both in one day. Taxi to the Raptor Center at 9:45, ninety minutes there, second taxi to the Fortress, paid at the gate no problem on a quieter day, back downtown by 1:30 for lunch. The whole thing cost us maybe $60 in taxis total. Doable but you do have to move.
