Usually docked at the downtown cruise terminal on South Franklin Street. You walk off and you are in Juneau's shopping and restaurant district immediately.
How to Get Into Town
Ships dock on the downtown waterfront; no transfer needed. The Blue Bus to Mendenhall Glacier departs nearby for $45 round trip.
Main Attractions
Mendenhall Glacier is the headliner: a living glacier with walking trails and a visitor center 13 miles from the ship. The Mount Roberts Tramway and whale-watching boats are both walkable alternatives that require less time.
How Much Time You Need
7+ hours gives you the glacier plus one more activity. A 5-6 hour call still works well with the glacier as the sole focus.
Keep in Mind
The Mount Roberts Tramway sells out in the morning on busy days. If the tram is your plan, go there before doing anything else.
Safety & Comfort
Juneau is very safe. The waterfront and tourist areas have a continuous cruise-season presence and negligible street crime.

We booked a whale watching tour directly with a small operator — four ships in port that day and the big operators were packed. Found a company that limited to 24 passengers. Saw four humpbacks including a mother and calf. They were close enough that the calf surfaced next to the boat bow. Booked via email three weeks out.
Mount Roberts Tramway was $34 direct versus $85 through the ship for the same tram. Takes about 5 minutes to reach the alpine level. We hiked above the tree line for an hour and had the whole city and channel laid out below us. Clear day, extraordinary views. The eagles circling at tram level were surreal.
Booked the timed-entry ticket for Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center at recreation.gov six weeks before sailing. Blue Bus was $8 each way from the pier area. We spent two hours at the glacier, got within 200 meters of the ice face on the East Glacier Trail, and watched a small iceberg calve off. One of the best things of the entire cruise.
