Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Key West
DIY Score
Effortless DIY
Walk everything, start early, and pace yourself in the midday heat.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at Pier B, two blocks from Duval Street. Some ships use the Navy Outer Mole and ride a free shuttle into Old Town instead.
How to Get Into Town
Walk it: Duval Street is 2 blocks away, free. Old Town is tiny, so most cruisers never need any transport at all.
Main Attractions
Duval Street, the Southernmost Point, and the Hemingway House anchor the day. All are within an easy walk of the pier.
How Much Time You Need
4-6 hours covers Old Town comfortably. The island is small, so a short call still works well.
Keep in Mind
Scooters and heat are the real hazards. Duval traffic is busy and the midday sun on foot is punishing in summer.
Safety & Comfort
Very safe and easy for first-timers. Key West is a walkable US town where the main hazards are traffic and heat, not crime.

Rented a scooter thinking it'd be a fun way around and honestly the Duval traffic was more stressful than fun. Would just walk next time. Cool island though.
Ended up at the Hemingway house almost by accident and spent way longer than planned just watching those six-toed cats sleep in the garden. There was a big one on Hemingway's bed like he owned the place.
We walked out to Fort Zachary Taylor for the beach and it was the best call, way calmer than Duval with the little ones. The walk there was hot though, buy water before you set off. Shady spots under the pines by the fort saved us.
Honestly we just walked off, got a key lime pie on a stick and wandered Duval for a few hours. Didn't pay for a single tour. Best kind of port day.
We took the Conch train instead of walking the whole thing and it was the right call in that heat. Got off at the Southernmost Point for the photo, waited maybe 20 min in line, worth it once.
Our ship was on the Outer Mole and I panicked a bit because you can't walk off, you have to wait for the shuttle. It was fine, ran every few minutes, but budget time for it on the way back. I did not enjoy the line at the end.
