Houston day trips need a car and firm timing. There is no cheap public link, and I-45 traffic can bite on the way back.

Did the Space Center Houston thing on our own with a booked shuttle. Loved the tram tour but I was sweating the traffic the whole ride back. We made it with time to spare but I wouldn't cut it closer.
Pleasure Pier was a hit with our two but honestly it added up fast with the ride prices. Kids didn't care, they just wanted the Ferris wheel again.
We just walked off into the Strand and spent the morning poking around the old buildings and a coffee shop. Didn't need a plan, didn't need a car. Easiest embarkation-city port day we've had.
The $1 trolley to the Seawall is a steal. Bring quarters though, the driver won't break a five. Sat and watched the Gulf for an hour, perfect.
