Can you do this cruise port on your own?
San Diego
DIY Score
Effortless DIY
Walk the Embarcadero; grab a rideshare only for Balboa Park or Coronado.
Tender or Docked?
Docked downtown on the Embarcadero, no tender. You walk off into the heart of San Diego's waterfront.
How to Get Into Town
You are already downtown: the Gaslamp Quarter is a 10-15 min walk, free. The trolley is four blocks away; rideshares are everywhere.
Main Attractions
The USS Midway and the waterfront are right at the ship; Balboa Park and the zoo are a short ride. Coronado is a ferry away.
How Much Time You Need
The waterfront fills a few hours; a full day easily adds Balboa Park or Coronado. Nothing is far.
Keep in Mind
As a homeport, mind your embark or disembark timing. On sailing day you must be aboard by the boarding deadline, not all-aboard for a shore call.
Safety & Comfort
A safe, easy, English-speaking city; one of the simplest ports for a first-timer.

Flat and easy the whole waterfront, which my scooter handled with no trouble. We took the ferry to Coronado for the beach and the old hotel. Honestly the least stressful port of the whole trip.
You literally walk off into downtown. We did the USS Midway right by the ship, then wandered the Embarcadero to Seaport Village. No taxi, no tour, no stress. One of the easiest port mornings we’ve ever had.
Disembark day, we stored bags at the terminal, took a Lyft to Balboa Park for two hours, came back, and were at the airport ten minutes later for an afternoon flight. Smooth as anything.
Zoo with the kids ate the whole day and cost a fortune but it’s world class, worth it once. Quick rideshare each way from the pier. Younger ones flagged by mid afternoon though.
embarkation morning we just strolled little italy for coffee and pastries then boarded. didnt overthink it. lovely relaxed start to the cruise
