Stood at the Kilauea overlook with the caldera steaming away below us and lost track of time completely. The drive up from the pier was nothing, easy road the whole way. Having our own car meant we could just stand there as long as we wanted.
I kept an eye on the clock the entire time at the volcano because that drive back is longer than you think. We left the park a bit after 3 and were on the ship by 4:30 with time to spare. Would have panicked if we had lingered.
We figured we would grab a car at the airport when we got there and there was nothing left, it was a two ship day. Ended up taxiing to Rainbow Falls and downtown instead, which was pretty enough, but I was gutted we missed the volcano.
honestly just stayed in hilo. walked the little downtown, got poke and shave ice, sat at liliuokalani gardens for ages. no volcano no stress. lovely slow day
We are in our 70s and did not want to drive, so we split a van with another couple from the ship. The driver took us to the park, Akaka Falls and back with plenty of time. Worth every dollar not to deal with the logistics ourselves.
Took the kids to Rainbow Falls first thing (empty at 9am), then the zoo which is free and they loved it. Skipped the long volcano drive because a 6 year old in a car seat for 90 minutes round trip was never going to work. Good day for us.
