Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Reykjavik
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Commit to one plan: the city on foot or the full Golden Circle loop.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at Skarfabakki, 4 km from the city. You walk off into the new Vor terminal, but downtown is a bus ride or a 45-55 minute walk away.
How to Get Into Town
Golden Circle: book a full-day tour or rent a car. For the city, bus 16 runs from the pier to the centre for about 690 ISK.
Main Attractions
The Golden Circle's three stops are the headline: Thingvellir, the Geysir area, and Gullfoss. Reykjavik's Old Town and the Blue Lagoon are the main alternatives.
How Much Time You Need
The full Golden Circle needs 7-8 hours. It is a whole-day commitment, so pick it or the city, not both.
Keep in Mind
The Golden Circle eats the whole day. It is roughly two hours each way to the far stops, so do not try to squeeze in anything else.
Safety & Comfort
One of the safest ports anywhere. Crime is very low and English is spoken almost everywhere.

We booked a small group Golden Circle tour ourselves instead of through the ship and saved a fortune. That said it is a LONG day and I did keep checking the time on the drive back from Gullfoss. Got back with about an hour to spare.
skipped the whole countryside thing and just did the city. hallgrimskirkja, wandered the harbour, had an obscenely expensive bowl of soup. no regrets, lovely walkable little capital.
Gullfoss was stunning but the steps and the wind were a lot for my wife's knees. We saw the upper viewpoint and left the lower path. Still glad we went, just know your limits on that one.
Word of warning, the free shuttle everyone talks about online is gone now. We stood around at the terminal a bit confused before someone pointed us to the bus. Bus 16 was cheap and easy once we figured it out.
Strokkur erupting was the moment for our kids, they wanted to wait for it to go again and again. Long drive out with two of them in the back but the Geysir stop made it worth it.
