Main Attractions
Senate Square, Market Square, and the Rock Church are the core. Add the Suomenlinna sea fortress if you have the time.
How Much Time You Need
5-7 hours is ideal. That covers the central squares and churches, with time for Suomenlinna if you want it.
Keep in Mind
Know your terminal and its tram. From Hernesaari especially, plan the tram or taxi before you disembark.

Our ship was at Hernesaari and the tram stop was a solid 15 min walk from the gangway, which nobody warned us about. Not the end of the world but I was grumpy about it in the rain. Taxi back was easy though.
We toyed with the Tallinn ferry and thankfully talked ourselves out of it. Two hours each way was cutting it way too fine against all aboard. Saw people fretting about it on the ship. Just do Helsinki, its plenty.
we were docked right at south harbour so just walked in. senate square, the market, an overpriced but delicious cinnamon bun. didnt even use a tram. lovely easy morning.
Suomenlinna was the highlight for us, such a peaceful ferry ride out. The paths on the island are uneven so we took it slow. Rock church was worth the small entry too, so unusual inside.
