Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Riga
DIY Score
Effortless DIY
Walk in along the river; the compact Old Town needs no tour.
Tender or Docked?
Docked at the central passenger terminal. You walk off and follow the riverfront into the Old Town in 10-20 minutes on flat ground.
How to Get Into Town
A flat 10-20 minute riverside walk, free. The passenger terminal sits just north of the Old Town along the Daugava.
Main Attractions
Old Town squares, Art Nouveau facades, and one of Europe's largest markets. Nearly all of it is free and self-guided.
How Much Time You Need
4-5 hours covers the highlights. The Old Town is small, so a full day only matters if you add Art Nouveau and the market or a day trip.
Keep in Mind
Use the Bolt app, not street taxis. Riga is easy, but unmetered taxis are the one common way visitors get overcharged.
Safety & Comfort
Safe and easy for first-timers. Normal city awareness covers it, with the main annoyance being taxi overcharging.

Slots in nicely between Tallinn and Gdansk. Walked off, along the river, into the old town in about fifteen minutes. Cheap, pretty, easy. Wish more people knew about it.
Flat walk in which suited us fine. We did the old town slowly, sat in Dome Square, took the lift up St Peters for the view rather than the stairs. Lovely gentle day.
I'd read horror stories about taxi scams so I was braced for a fight, and then it just wasnt. Four euros in the app, quiet drive, the driver even pointed out the cathedral. Spent the rest of the day annoyed at myself for worrying.
Got pulled into an old town bar by a guy on the street and the bill was a small fortune. Rookie mistake. Check the prices and dont follow the promoters.
I went looking for the Art Nouveau street on a whim and ended up just standing on Alberta iela with my neck craned back at all these faces carved into the buildings, lost half an hour there and didnt notice.
