Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Leith / Edinburgh
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Bus from Leith to the Royal Mile; a full Old Town day is easy to plan.
Tender or Docked?
Edinburgh cruise ships dock at Leith or anchor at South Queensferry - confirm your schedule before planning. These are two completely different port days in terms of logistics, distance, and what you can realistically reach.
How to Get Into Town
From Leith: Bus 11, 22, or 35 to Edinburgh city center in 10-15 min, ~£2 each way. From South Queensferry: taxi or bus to Edinburgh in 20-25 min. Both routes are straightforward.
Main Attractions
Edinburgh Castle anchors the Old Town and is visible from almost everywhere in the city. The Royal Mile runs from the Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with closes, courtyards, and museums along the way.
How Much Time You Need
A full 9-10 hour call allows the Royal Mile, the Castle, and one or two other Old Town sights. Stirling or St Andrews require 11+ hours and a direct train.
Keep in Mind
Confirm whether your ship docks at Leith or anchors at South Queensferry before you plan your day. The two locations are 15 km apart and have different travel times to Edinburgh.
Safety & Comfort
Edinburgh is one of Scotland's safest cities for visitors. Standard awareness applies in crowded tourist areas; weather can change quickly in any season.

We anchored at South Queensferry, not Leith. Took about 40 minutes from tender queue to getting into Edinburgh by taxi. Not the end of the world but worth knowing before you plan. My cabin neighbour expected to be in Edinburgh by 9am and it was closer to 10:30.
Arthur's Seat on a clear day is genuinely one of the best views I have had from any port anywhere. 45 minutes up, views to the Forth, the whole city laid out below you. If you are physically able, do not skip it.
We walked the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyroodhouse, ducked into a few closes, had lunch at a pub off the Mile, and finished at the National Museum. Perfect day, almost no money spent except the castle entry. Did not need a tour.
Our kids are 7 and 9 and they loved the castle. The Crown Jewels impressed them more than expected. The Royal Mile was great for them too - lots to look at and easy to manage. Book castle tickets well ahead, we almost couldn't get in.
We went straight to the Royal Yacht Britannia since we were docked in Leith and it was a short walk. The audio tour was excellent and not crowded in the morning. We then took the bus into the city afterward. Having Britannia so close to the dock was a real bonus.
