I've done a lot of ports and none of them tell you flat out that you legally cannot walk out of town. We stuck to the museum and the shops and it was still one of the most extraordinary places I've stood. Just know that going in.
got caught out with no cash, tried to tip a guide and realised theres literally no atm on the whole island. everything's card. bring the right card, thats my one bit of advice.
Did a guided glacier hike and it was the best money I spent all cruise. Guide had the rifle slung over his shoulder the whole time, which really drives home that this isnt a stroll in a park. Humbling place.
We'd built the whole trip around seeing a polar bear and then read you have to stay 500m away and can't leave town alone. Booked a boat trip which was wonderful, but I wish we'd understood the rules before we got our hopes up.
Spent weeks worrying about whether we needed some special permit for Svalbard. Turns out no permit for the islands themselves, but our routing through Oslo meant sorting a double-entry Schengen visa. Check that early, it stressed me needlessly late on.
