A full day suits the south. Town alone is quick, but Jarlshof and Sumburgh need bus time each way.

Took the number 6 bus down to Jarlshof, two quid each, unbelievable value. The site really is something, four thousand years stacked up in one spot. Just make dead sure you know the bus back, they dont run every half hour out there.
Went for the puffins at Sumburgh and there was not a single one. Turns out we were a week too late, they'd all gone back to sea by August. Cliffs were dramatic anyway but I was gutted. Check the dates before you build your day around them.
We took the short bus to Scalloway instead of the long haul south, felt more our pace. Lovely little castle and a sobering wartime story about the Shetland Bus boats. Back in town for lunch, no rushing.
Tendered in which was smooth, but we docked at Mair's Pier on a previous stop and it's a proper walk into town. Either way we gave ourselves an hour back at the end for the southern bus and it worked out with time to spare.
didnt do any of the bus trips, just mooched around lerwick. the flagstone streets, the little fort, that free museum which is honestly excellent. rained the whole time and i still had a good day
