Free shuttle from Hatston, about 7 minutes. If you tender or dock at Kirkwall Pier you are already walking distance from the center.
Main Attractions
Neolithic Orkney is the headline. Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness sit close together, with St Magnus Cathedral right in town.

Plan for a full port day. The sights are spread across the mainland, so buses and buffers eat real time.

Rural buses are infrequent, so plan the return. Missing the one bus back from Skara Brae can put your all-aboard at risk.

Did the stone circles on the public bus and it worked fine, but you have to respect the timetable. We nearly talked ourselves into "one more stop" and would have been stuck. Watch the clock from early afternoon.
We wanted Skara Brae so we skipped the scenic circuit and took the public bus out, then a taxi back because the return times didnt line up. Got there fine but it took planning, dont assume one bus does everything.
I was nervous about relying on buses out to Skara Brae so we just booked a taxi for the morning. Best decision, driver waited at each site and we were never anxious about the last shuttle. Cost a bit but worth the peace of mind.
honestly we didnt even leave Kirkwall. cathedral is free and lovely, wandered the little streets, had a coffee. sometimes thats enough
