you walk off the ship and about half an hour later you're standing in front of THE mountain from every iceland photo ever. bit longer than i expected and the last stretch is roadside, but couldnt believe you can reach it on foot at all. took my pictures, wandered back. no tour needed for the famous bit.
Did the kayaking with the kids under Kirkjufell, booked ahead. Calm water that morning and the view from the fjord was unreal. Pricey but a proper memory. Back on the tender in good time after.
We tendered as we were on a bigger ship, quick five minute ride. Walked the road out to Kirkjufellsfoss, a good 40 minutes, mostly level but you're on the road for a fair bit so mind the cars. Still, back with time to spare. Booked nothing, spent nothing, one of the best stops of the cruise.
Wanted to see more of the peninsula but there's no bus and I couldnt get a taxi for love nor money. Lesson learned, book your tour before you sail. Ended up just doing the mountain, which was gorgeous, but I'd have liked the glacier too.
The wind by the waterfall nearly took us off our feet, proper Icelandic weather. Worth it though. Just be ready for it to be twice as cold and wild as the town, and hold onto your phone when you're photographing.
