We did the American beaches with a private guide, four of us splitting the cost. Long day in the car but the cemetery at Colleville is something everyone should see once. Not a DIY thing though.
People forget Cite de la Mer is literally at the ship. We spent the whole call there, the submarine and the Titanic bit were superb, and never needed a bus. Great rainy-day port.
Took the 9:20 train to Bayeux, saw the tapestry and had lunch, back on the 15:10. About 12 euros each way. The tapestry is smaller than you think but genuinely moving.
Cite de la Mer saved us with two kids on a grey day. Huge aquarium, climbing through a real submarine. They loved it. Ten minute walk into town after for crepes.
We wanted the beaches but hadn’t booked, and the on-the-day tour prices were eye watering. Ended up doing town and the museum instead, which was good, but not why we came.
