DIY Score
Easy DIY
Time the Saltstraumen bus to the tidal peak, or enjoy the walkable town.
Tender or Docked?
Docked a 5-10 min walk from the center. You step off onto the quay and walk straight into a compact modern city, no shuttle needed.
How to Get Into Town
The center is a free 5-10 min walk from the ship. Saltstraumen is a NOK 50-80 bus or a taxi 30-40 min out.
Main Attractions
Saltstraumen is the headline; the aviation museum and city center are the easy walkable backups. Time the tide, or keep it simple in town.
How Much Time You Need
3 hours for the town; 4-5 hours to add Saltstraumen by bus. The tide and timetable decide your day.
Keep in Mind
Saltstraumen is only dramatic at peak tide. Check the Saltstraumen calendar and match it to the bus before you commit the trip.
Safety & Comfort
Very safe and easy to navigate alone. Bodo is a calm, modern city with minimal crime.

Honestly a bit of a disappointment for us. We got to Saltstraumen between the tides and it was basically calm water. Nobody warned us it only really goes off at certain times. Lesson learned.
We stayed close to the ship, my husband cant manage long trips anymore. The center is flat and easy and we spent a happy morning in the museum out of the wind. No stress at all.
Took the local bus out to Saltstraumen and got lucky with the tide, it was roaring. Just check the times both ways, the bus is not frequent and I nearly cut it fine coming back.
Booked the RIB safari through a local operator rather than the ship. Cost less, hit the current at full strength, back at the pier with 90 minutes buffer. Would do it that way again.
