Docked, but the terminal decides your day. Most ships tie up at the central PTA pier a short walk from town, while some larger ships use IJmuiden, 40 km out.
How to Get Into Town
From PTA: a 20-min walk or 1-hour tram ticket for EUR 3.40. From IJmuiden it is bus 382 to Sloterdijk then a train, about 45-60 min door to door.
Main Attractions
The big three: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House. A canal cruise and a wander through the Jordaan round out a classic day.

didnt book anything, just wandered the jordaan and took a little canal boat. rained for ten minutes then stopped. pretty perfect day honestly
My husband's knee doesn't love cobblestones so we kept it slow, took a tram to the museum quarter and did one museum properly instead of rushing. The bikes are a bit alarming at first but you get used to looking twice.
I set an alarm for the exact minute the Anne Frank tickets release online, six weeks out, and they were gone within about ten minutes anyway. Couldn't believe it. Did the canal ring instead and honestly loved it.
Fair warning, our ship was at IJmuiden not the city, which nobody made obvious until the last minute. The bus was fine but it's the better part of an hour each way and I spent the ride back watching the clock. Amsterdam itself was lovely once we got there.
The kids loved the canal boat more than any museum, no surprise there. Easy port with a stroller apart from the bridges and the bike lanes. We were back onboard with time to spare.
