4-5 hours covers the centre and one museum well. Doing both museums properly needs closer to a full day.
Keep in Mind
The best sights are a 2-2.5 km walk from the pier. Fine for most, but plan a taxi if that is a lot for you.

The old town museum was the highlight but the walk out there was longer than we expected. We taxied back for about 100 kroner which was money well spent for our legs.
Booked ARoS online the night before and went straight up to the rainbow walkway first thing. Standing in that ring of coloured glass with the whole city going pink and green, I completely forgot about the clock. Never touched cash all day.
Our ship was at the far berth and we didnt realise there was a shuttle, so we set off walking and it was a slog through the port area. Find out which berth youre on before you march off.
