We just grabbed a taxi at the gate, agreed a price for a few hours, and did the lagoon then Dune 7. The flamingos alone were worth the stop. No tour needed for that, and it cost us a fraction of the ships price.
climbed maybe a third of the way up dune 7 and gave up, that sand is no joke. sat at the bottom watching the sandboarders instead. still glad i went, just wear shoes you dont mind emptying later.
Booked the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 in advance and so glad we didnt try to wing it. The guide timed the whole thing around the tide, drove us along the beach with the dunes towering over us. Kids called it a rollercoaster. Not cheap but genuinely unforgettable.
I stressed for weeks because there's almost nothing online about doing this port yourself. In the end it was simple: shuttle to the gate, taxi driver sorted us out, everyone spoke English. Wish I'd worried less.
My husband can't do sand and heat so we taxied up to Swakopmund instead. Lovely old town, had coffee and cake like proper Germans, wandered the jetty. A gentler day and it suited us perfectly.
I stood at that lagoon for the best part of an hour just watching the flamingos shift about in the shallows, pink against the grey water. Didnt take a single tour, didnt need to. One of those mornings you just go quiet.
