How to Get Into Town
Luxor is ~3 hrs each way by convoy. A booked private or shared tour that arranges the permit is the only realistic way to go.
Main Attractions
The Valley of the Kings, Karnak, and Hatshepsut's temple are the headline. All sit in and around Luxor, a three-hour drive inland.
How Much Time You Need
A Luxor day runs 12-13 hours. Roughly seven are in the vehicle, so there is no slack to add extras.
Keep in Mind
The desert drive and convoy own the day. Three hours each way plus checkpoints means your timing has very little room.

Down in one of the tombs it was silent and stifling and the colours on the walls looked like they were painted last week, not three thousand years ago. I forgot about the heat and the drive for a while. Then someone's flash went off and a guard started shouting.
Honestly with two kids the 3 hour drive each way was rough and Luxor was punishingly hot. They perked up in the Valley of the Kings but we were all wiped by the drive back. Would maybe do Hurghada beach next time.
Reminds me of doing Petra from Aqaba, same clock-watching all day. We booked a private car instead of the ship and paid a lot less, but I would not risk this one with a random taxi. Too far, too many checkpoints. The convoy out of the port is a whole experience in itself.
