Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Mombasa
DIY Score
Keep it simple
For safari, book a cruise-timed operator; Amboseli is too far for a day.
Tender or Docked?
Docked at Kilindini Harbour. You walk off at the modern cruise terminal, about 3-4 km from Fort Jesus and the Old Town.
How to Get Into Town
Tuk-tuk or taxi to Fort Jesus: ~10 min, about $7-10. There is no practical walk; negotiate the fare or use a ride app.
Main Attractions
Tsavo East is the realistic safari; Fort Jesus and the Old Town are the easy city day. Amboseli is too far to attempt.
How Much Time You Need
A full 10-12 hr call for a safari; 3-4 hours covers the city.
Keep in Mind
Amboseli is not a day trip. At 6-7 hours each way it cannot be done from a cruise call; Tsavo East is the realistic safari.
Safety & Comfort
Manageable with active awareness. English helps, but negotiate prices and keep your guard up in busy areas.

We booked a private Tsavo safari with a local operator months ahead, cost a fraction of the ship's price and the guide was superb. Saw elephants and a lion pride. But make no mistake it's a huge day, two and a half hours there and back, and I was quietly counting the minutes on the drive home.
With two young kids we skipped the long safari and did Haller Park and Fort Jesus by tuk-tuk. Feeding the giraffes was the highlight of the whole cruise for them. Way less stress than a full day in a vehicle.
fort jesus and the old town were fascinating, carved doors everywhere, proper history. tuk tuk driver waited for me and showed me around for a few hours for a fair price once we agreed it. just be firm and friendly on the fare
Nearly booked Amboseli off a website then realised it's six or seven hours each way. Completely impossible in a day. Did Tsavo instead and it was still a lot of driving. Do your homework on the distances before you pay anyone.
Honestly the getting in and out of the safari jeep was harder than I expected at my age, and it's a long bumpy day. Beautiful animals but I'd think carefully if you've got knees like mine. The city was much more our pace.
