There is no public bus service practical for tourists. Taxis wait at the port gate and are generally easy to negotiate with or hire by the hour. The standard approach is to hire a taxi for a half-day at an agreed hourly rate (OMR 10/hr first 3 hours, OMR 7/hr after), which covers most of the key sights.

Muttrah Souq is a 10-minute walk from the port. The Grand Mosque and Old Muscat require a taxi but are 20-30 minutes away. A standard 9-hour call allows a comfortable, unrushed circuit of all three. Entry fees are low across the board.

English is widely used in Muscat's tourist and business areas, especially compared to other Gulf cities. Taxi drivers at the port generally communicate adequately in English. The main souq area is compact and easy to navigate on foot.

Hiring a taxi for OMR 10-14 per hour is far cheaper than ship excursions and gives exactly the same access. The main attractions require no guide to enjoy. The Grand Mosque has a short visiting window (closes 11 am weekdays, closed Fridays), which is the main timing constraint to manage.

Muttrah Souq involves walking on uneven stone; not hilly. Old Muscat and the fort have some steps. Heat is the primary physical challenge: Muscat is one of the hottest cities on Earth from May through September, with temperatures regularly above 40 C.

Ships dock at Muttrah Port, adjacent to the Muttrah Corniche in central Muscat. The berth is a short walk from the Muttrah Souq entrance. Gangway access is standard. Taxis and tour operators wait at the port gate immediately outside. The Corniche walkway along the waterfront is accessible directly from the terminal.

Getting back to the ship

Allow at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. Muscat traffic can be heavy on main roads approaching the port, particularly from the Grand Mosque direction. Ask your taxi driver to confirm a realistic return time from each location.

The Grand Mosque closes to non-Muslims at 11 am. It is also closed all day on Fridays. If your port day is a Friday, the Grand Mosque is not accessible at all. If it is any other day, plan to be there before 9:30 am and do not leave it for the afternoon.

Modest dress is non-negotiable at the mosque and expected throughout Muscat. Women must cover hair and wear a loose-fitting full-length covering at the Grand Mosque. Men need long trousers and a sleeved shirt. Both are enforced at the mosque entrance and sarong loaners are not typically provided.

Extreme heat from May to September. Muscat regularly exceeds 40 C in summer with high humidity near the coast. Any outdoor activity should be planned for before 10 am or after 4 pm if your call allows. The Grand Mosque has air-conditioned interior areas.

Negotiate the taxi rate before departing the port gate. The standard hourly rate is OMR 10/hr for the first three hours. Some drivers quote higher for cruise passengers. Compare with one or two drivers before agreeing.

Frankincense is a genuine Omani specialty. Muttrah Souq is one of the best places in the world to buy it at a fair price. Ask the vendor to let you smell different grades; Hougary (Boswellia sacra) is the Omani variety.

Extreme heat is the primary risk for cruisers visiting May through September. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can develop quickly. Carry water, plan breaks in air-conditioned spaces (the mosque, taxis, and the indoor souq lanes), and avoid outdoor exertion between 11 am and 4 pm if possible.

Souq vendor pressure is standard for the region but significantly milder than in Morocco or Egypt. A polite but firm "no thank you" ends most interactions. Prices in the souq are negotiable.

Photography restrictions. The Palace of Al Alam and the Sultan's residences should not be photographed directly. The Grand Mosque allows photography in designated areas but not during prayers. Follow any posted restrictions.

Comfort for different travelers

Muscat is among the most comfortable and clean Gulf cities for independent visitors. English is widely spoken in tourist and commercial areas. Cash in OMR is preferred at souqs; ATMs are available near the terminal. Cards are accepted at hotels and established restaurants.
