Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Santo Tomas de Castilla
DIY Score
Keep it simple
Stick to Quirigua, Rio Dulce, or Livingston; Antigua is far too far.
Tender or Docked?
Docked at an isolated working port. You walk off into a secure craft market, but there is no tourist town to explore; everything else is a drive or a boat.
How to Get Into Town
No town to reach; sights are 1-1.5 hrs out. Quirigua, Rio Dulce, and Livingston all need a booked driver, tour, or boat.
Main Attractions
Quirigua's Maya stelae, Rio Dulce boat rides, and Garifuna Livingston. These, not Antigua, are the realistic day.
How Much Time You Need
A full day for Quirigua or Rio Dulce. With long drives and boats, there are no quick highlights here.
Keep in Mind
Antigua and Tikal are not reachable here. Despite what some assume, Antigua is 5-6 hours each way, so the realistic sights are Quirigua, Rio Dulce, and Livingston.
Safety & Comfort
Manageable with a trusted operator. The main risks are logistics, language, and the long return, plus keeping a low profile in the port towns.

We asked three separate people at the port about getting to Antigua and finally one honest guide told us flat out it was five hours away. Glad we found out before we tried. Ended up at Quirigua instead and it was wonderful, but do your homework.
Pre booked a driver for Quirigua, ninety minutes each way, agreed hed have us back by 2:30 for a 4pm all aboard. Stuck to it exactly. Those carved stelae are incredible and there was almost nobody else there. Just build in the buffer.
This port made me nervous, its not the polished kind. We booked a proper Rio Dulce boat tour through a known operator and it was fine, gorgeous even, but I would not have wandered off on my own here.
Took the boat over to Livingston, totally different world, Garifuna drumming and the best coconut fish soup weve ever had. Kids loved the boat. Long hot day though, bring water and bug spray.
We skipped the long trips entirely. Bought some beautiful textiles at the port market, had a quiet lunch and stayed close. At our pace, chasing ruins two hours away wasnt worth the worry.
