Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Charlotte Amalie
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Dock or tender, USD currency, fixed taxi rates to top beaches.
Tender or Docked?
St. Thomas uses both Havensight Pier (docked) and Charlotte Amalie Harbor anchorage (tendered). Check your ship's app the night before. Havensight puts you 10-15 min walk from downtown. Tendering drops you directly at the Charlotte Amalie waterfront.
How to Get Into Town
From Havensight, it's a 10-15 min walk along the waterfront road to Charlotte Amalie, or a $4-5 taxi. From the tender landing, you are already in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Both options are easy.
Main Attractions
Magens Bay Beach is $12-15 by taxi and consistently ranked among the world's top beaches. Downtown Charlotte Amalie is the Caribbean's premier duty-free shopping destination. Paradise Point tram is a quick add-on for panoramic views.
How Much Time You Need
A 7-8 hour call comfortably fits Magens Bay plus shopping. With 5-6 hours, pick one or the other.
Keep in Mind
St. Thomas can host six or more cruise ships simultaneously. Charlotte Amalie shopping streets and Magens Bay both feel the volume on heavy ship days. Check the port schedule and plan accordingly.
Safety & Comfort
St. Thomas is U.S. territory and generally safe in tourist areas during the day. Some neighborhoods away from the tourist corridor require normal urban awareness after dark, but this does not typically affect cruise day itineraries.

Magens Bay admission is $5 and goes to a nonprofit that maintains the beach. Do not resent paying it. The beach is flawless — calm water, white sand, clean facilities. Get there before 10 AM if you want a chair in a good spot. By 11 AM on a ship day it is very busy.
As a US citizen, the $1,600 duty-free allowance from the USVI is real and it is double the standard limit from any other port. We bought rum, jewelry, and perfume. Savings were genuine. Bring a list of US prices from home to compare on the spot.
We anchored so took the tender in. Dropped us right at the waterfront. Walked up the 99 Steps to get the historic St. Thomas view, then did duty-free shopping for an hour. Grabbed a taxi to Magens Bay for the afternoon. Clean water, perfect sand. Back at the tender landing with 75 minutes to spare.
