How Much Time You Need
3-4 hours is plenty for a beach day. The whole island is small, so most people never feel rushed.
Keep in Mind
The cruise center beach is not the whole island. The near-pier sand is developed and can be rocky; the nicer natural beach is a short taxi north.

Very safe and first-timer friendly. English and US dollars make this one of the easiest Caribbean stops to do solo; just confirm taxi fares first.

Governors Beach was the move with our two kids. Four bucks each in the taxi, way calmer water and actual shade under the trees. Pack your own water though, theres nothing out there.
Wish someone had told us the beach right by the ship is kind of rocky. We stubbed our toes for twenty minutes before a local told us to just taxi to Governors. Should have done that first.
We stayed close, sat in the shade with a rum punch and watched the ships. My knees are not what they were and this was one of the few ports where I didnt have to work for it.
Took the little boat out to Gibbs Cay and stood in waist deep water while stingrays slid past my legs. I was terrified at first and then completely didnt want to leave.
