Cozumel has three cruise piers. Punta Langosta is in the heart of San Miguel and walkable. International Pier and Puerta Maya are further south and require a $5-6 taxi to town.

San Miguel town is 5 min on foot from Punta Langosta, or 10-15 min by taxi from the outer piers. The ferry to Playa del Carmen runs from the San Miguel ferry terminal.

Reef snorkeling and diving, beach clubs, San Miguel, and the Playa del Carmen ferry are the main draws. All are excellent and accessible without ship excursions.

A beach club day fills 5-6 hrs. A ferry to Playa del Carmen and back takes the full port call.

Know which pier you are docked at before planning your day. Punta Langosta is very different from the outer piers for access to the ferry and town.

Three different cruise piers serve Cozumel with different town access situations. Punta Langosta is walkable to San Miguel in 5 min. International Pier and Puerta Maya require a $5-6 taxi to town (10-15 min). The ferry to Playa del Carmen runs frequently from the San Miguel ferry dock. Road network is simple.

The island has some of the Caribbean's best snorkeling and diving, free and pay beaches, a town worth walking, and easy ferry access to the mainland. A full port call is easily filled with good activities at all budget levels.

English is widely spoken throughout the tourist areas. San Miguel has good signage. Taxi rates are government-posted. Beach clubs and dive operators all cater to independent cruisers. The ferry to Playa del Carmen requires getting to the San Miguel ferry dock, a taxi from the outer piers.

Snorkeling, beach clubs, and San Miguel are significantly cheaper independently. Dive operators charge $50-70 for two-tank shore dives versus $90-120+ on ship tours. Beach club day passes run $40-70 pp independently. The island rewards independent exploration.

San Miguel is flat and walkable. Snorkeling and beach activities are low-impact. Tulum ruins involve walking on uneven paths. Playa del Carmen ferry and Tulum combination involves ferries, taxis, and site walking over several hours.

How this port works

Cozumel has three cruise piers, all of which involve direct gangway access. Punta Langosta is centrally located in San Miguel town; you walk off into the town within 5 minutes. International Pier and Puerta Maya are both a few miles south of town; a short taxi ride to San Miguel costs $5-6 USD per car. Check the ship's daily program the evening before to confirm which pier you will dock at; it changes by ship and itinerary. Passengers at the outer piers can take a taxi to the San Miguel ferry terminal and catch the Ultramar ferry to Playa del Carmen if desired. The ferry runs every 30-60 min and takes 45 min across the channel.

Getting back to the ship

If visiting Playa del Carmen or Tulum from Cozumel, the ferry crossing is 45 min each way plus time to the pier and back. Leave your last mainland destination with at least 90 minutes before all-aboard to allow for ferry wait, crossing, and taxi from the pier back to the ship. Missing the last ferry departure risks missing the ship.

From the island, allow 45 min before all-aboard to reach the gangway. If you are on the mainland (Playa del Carmen), you need the ferry crossing (45 min), time to walk to the ferry terminal, and a taxi back to the pier: leave the mainland with 2 full hours before all-aboard without exception.

On a short port call (under 5 hrs)?

On a call under 7 hours, stay on the island. A morning at Chankanaab National Park for snorkeling and beach access, a taxi back to the pier for lunch in San Miguel, and done.

Common mistakes to avoid

Know which pier you dock at before the port day. Punta Langosta is downtown and walkable. International Pier and Puerta Maya are south of town; taxis cost $5-6 per car. The ferry terminal to Playa del Carmen is in San Miguel, not at the outer piers. If you dock at an outer pier and want to take the ferry, you need a taxi to town first.

For Tulum, plan return logistics before you leave the ship, not after you arrive. The route is: pier to ferry terminal by taxi or foot, 45-min Ultramar ferry, taxi from Playa del Carmen to Tulum ruins (60-90 min), 3-4 hrs at the site, taxi back to Playa del Carmen ferry terminal, ferry back to Cozumel. The last ferry must land in Cozumel at least 45 min before all-aboard. Any delay -- traffic, ferry missed, taxi wait -- eats into that window.

Cozumel reefs are protected marine park; sunscreen must be reef-safe. Mexico enforces restrictions on oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens in the park area; biodegradable or mineral sunscreen is required. Violators can be fined.

Taxi rates from the outer piers are fixed government rates. Drivers will have a posted rate card; $5-6 to town is the standard. There is no need to negotiate; just confirm the destination and confirm it is the posted rate before entering the vehicle.

The three cruise piers create very different starting points. If you want the ferry to Playa del Carmen, confirm your departure pier in advance: from Punta Langosta you can walk to the ferry; from International Pier or Puerta Maya you need a taxi to town first, which adds 15-20 min and $5-6 to your morning logistics.

Renting a scooter in San Miguel is an excellent way to see the whole island. Rentals start at $25-35 per half day and let you reach beaches and snorkeling spots the taxis don't easily serve. Wear a helmet and stick to the main coastal road.

Things to be aware of

Reef-safe sunscreen only in the water. Mexico's marine park rules prohibit chemical sunscreens in the ocean around Cozumel. Biodegradable or mineral-only options are required. Bringing your own from the ship is the simplest approach.

Scooter rental carries real risk. The main coastal road is fine; side streets and the cross-island road can have unexpected conditions. Wear a helmet. Small roadside incidents involving rentals are the most common tourist problem in Cozumel.

Strong current at some reef snorkel sites. Drift snorkeling is a feature of Cozumel's best reefs; professional guides know which sites are appropriate for which conditions. Follow your guide's instructions and do not snorkel independently at open-water reef sites unless you are experienced.

Comfort for different travelers

English is spoken everywhere tourists go in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. US dollars are accepted widely; pesos are better for local purchases. Card payment is standard in tourist venues. The island has good medical facilities relative to other Caribbean ports.

The ship will not wait for independent travelers (it does wait for its own delayed excursions).
