Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Puerto Vallarta
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Ride the cheap bus to the Malecon and save tours for the far sights.
Tender or Docked?
Almost always docked at the Marina Vallarta cruise terminal. You walk straight off onto the pier, about 5.5 km north of Old Town.
How to Get Into Town
"Centro" bus to the Malecon: about 15 min, roughly $1. Fixed-rate port taxis run around $16 per car to Old Town.
Main Attractions
The Malecon and Old Town are the easy DIY core. Beaches, the Cathedral, and a boat trip to Yelapa fill out the day.
How Much Time You Need
A half day covers the town easily. Old Town, the Malecon, and a beach fit a standard call with time to spare.
Keep in Mind
Timeshare and "free tour" pitches start at the terminal. A polite "no gracias" and keep walking is all it takes.
Safety & Comfort
A comfortable, tourist-friendly port. Normal city sense is enough; the main nuisance is sales pressure, not crime.
Tips from Cruisers
"honestly we just took the dollar bus to the malecon and walked the whole thing. got tacos, watched the sand sculptors, walked back…" — by Dana R.
honestly we just took the dollar bus to the malecon and walked the whole thing. got tacos, watched the sand sculptors, walked back. easy day, didnt spend more than $20 the whole time
We caught the bus at 9:30, paid about 12 pesos each, and were on the Malecon by 10. Back at the ship by 2 with hours to spare. The taxi drivers at the pier wanted way more so we just walked past them to the bus stop.
The timeshare people at the terminal are relentless. We wasted 20 minutes with a guy promising a free tour before we realized what it was. Once we got past them the day was lovely, but ugh.
Took a water taxi over to Yelapa on a whim. Tiny beach village, no cars, a waterfall walk, a lady selling pie on the sand. Almost lost track of time and had to hustle for the boat back...
My wife uses a cane so we stayed on the flat part of the Malecon and skipped the hills in Old Town. Sat by the cathedral, had a long lunch, watched the boats. Perfectly happy.
Much smoother than Cabo since you actually dock here. Walked off, grabbed the Centro bus near the Walmart, done. If you've cruised the Mexican Riviera before there are no surprises.
