Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Fuerte Amador
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Use Uber, start early, and respect the heat and return timing.
Tender or Docked?
Varies by ship: some now dock at the new Amador terminal, others still tender. Either way you land on the causeway, away from the city itself.
How to Get Into Town
Casco Viejo is a 15-min, ~$15-20 taxi (cheaper by Uber). No shuttle runs, so a taxi or Uber is essential.
Main Attractions
Miraflores locks and Casco Viejo are the two headline day-trips. The causeway and Biomuseo fill time near the ship.
How Much Time You Need
Plan on 6-8 hours to do the city justice. Transit each way is the main time cost.
Keep in Mind
Use Uber, not street taxis. Street cabs are known for overcharging and there is no city shuttle.
Safety & Comfort
Casco Viejo is safe and heavily policed by day; the main risk is taxi overcharging. Standard city caution elsewhere.
Tips from Cruisers

We tendered, which I hadn't expected, and the line at first drop was a good half hour. Once ashore we Ubered to Casco Viejo no problem. I just spent the whole afternoon glancing at my watch because of the traffic on the way back. Made it with 40 minutes to spare but my nerves were shot.
The heat really got to us in the old town by early afternoon. We took it slow, found a rooftop cafe in the shade and just watched the city. Take water, and don't try to rush around in that humidity.
honestly we never even left the causeway. rented bikes near the terminal, rode out with the skyline on one side and the canal ships on the other, had a beer. hot as anything but a lovely lazy day.
Uber to Miraflores was 8 dollars and about 25 minutes. Caught a big container ship going through the locks which the kids loved. Uber back to the ship was easy, just save the terminal as your pin.
Miraflores was half closed for renovation and the deck was packed. Bit of a letdown for the price honestly. Casco Viejo saved the day, gorgeous old streets and a great lunch, but I'd skip the locks next time.
new terminal meant we actually docked this time instead of tendering like the reviews warned. much smoother. get an uber, ignore the taxi guys shouting prices at the pier.
