I'll be honest, the warnings about not leaving the port on foot had me nervous. We took a taxi straight to Agua Clara, driver waited, brought us back. Watching a container ship rise in the locks was worth it, but I was glad to have a set plan and price.
Compared to Fuerte Amador on the Pacific side, Colon is more locked down, you really do stay in the port unless you've arranged wheels. The canal locks are the reason to come. Just sort your taxi at the pier and agree the price.
Grabbed a licensed cab outside Colon 2000, agreed 40 dollars round trip for the pair of us to Agua Clara with a wait. Twenty minutes each way. The 10 dollar entry gets you right up on the platform, and there's a newer deck over the old locks too. Easy morning, back well before all aboard.
didnt even leave the terminal honestly. wandered the duty free mall, bought a hat, had a drink. not exciting but the city outside isnt somewhere you stroll so it was fine for a short stop.
We booked a taxi to Portobelo and it was a longer, bumpier hour than expected each way. The old forts are atmospheric but by the time we got back I felt we'd spent the whole day in a car. Agua Clara would've been plenty.
