Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Amber Cove
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Enjoy the port for free, and negotiate taxi fares before you ride.
Tender or Docked?
Docked at the Amber Cove pier. You walk straight into a resort complex with pools, shops, and a beach before you decide whether to leave at all.
How to Get Into Town
Taxi to Puerto Plata: about 15 min, roughly $35 one way for 1-5 people. The cable car base is a similar ride at about $30.
Main Attractions
The port pools, the cable car, and the 27 Waterfalls are the headline choices. Beaches at Sosua and Cofresi are close too.
How Much Time You Need
A half day covers one outing comfortably. Most cruisers pick either the port complex or a single taxi trip, not both far and wide.
Keep in Mind
Taxis are unmetered and pricey, so agree the total before you ride. There is no cheap way out of the port bubble.
Safety & Comfort
The port is very safe and easy; town needs normal city awareness. The main friction is taxi pricing, not danger.
Tips from Cruisers

We never even left the port with two little ones. The pool was perfect, kids did the zip line, we had drinks and lunch right there. Sometimes the easy day is the right one.
The taxi prices genuinely shocked me. $35 each way to a town you can practically see from the ship. We paid it once to do the cable car and it was worth it but wow, come prepared for that.
Lovely to just sit by the pool with a good book while the family went off to the waterfalls. Flat, shaded seats, easy walking. My kind of port day honestly.
did the teleferico, took a taxi over, rode up, wandered the gardens at the top, came back down. nice views, christ statue like a mini rio. easy half day and back to the pool after
Amber Cove is basically a private resort with a Carnival ship attached. If you want the real Dominican Republic you have to work for it. We did Damajagua through a local operator and it was the best excursion of the trip, but it is not a DIY thing.
