The trick in Wellington is the cable car up then walk back down through the botanic garden, all downhill and the garden's free. We've done a lot of ports and this one's a gem for doing it yourself. Just the shuttle out of the port and you're away.
The wind nearly took us off our feet on the waterfront, we were not prepared. Beautiful city but check the forecast, our cable car views were half cloud. Te Papa saved the afternoon when it turned wet.
Booked Weta Workshop for late morning, taxi out to Miramar was about 20 minutes and 30ish dollars. Brilliant for a film nerd like me. Back in town with time for Cuba Street. Just book it in advance, it does sell out.
Perfect for us, flat along the harbour and the shuttle drops you right in it. We did Te Papa slowly, sat by the water, took the cable car up for the view and came back down. No hills, no stress, everyone spoke our language.
