Always docked, but which terminal matters a lot. The Overseas Passenger Terminal is at Circular Quay; White Bay is 6 km out with no train.
How to Get Into Town
From the OPT, just walk: the Opera House is 5 minutes away. For wider trips, tap on with Opal or a contactless card.
Main Attractions
The Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and The Rocks are on the doorstep. Bondi and the Blue Mountains are the bigger day trips.
How Much Time You Need
5-7 hours covers the harbour beautifully. Bondi or the Blue Mountains turn it into a full-day commitment.
Keep in Mind
Confirm your terminal first. The OPT is walkable to everything; White Bay needs a taxi to reach the tourist heart.

We were at the Overseas terminal and literally walked off next to the Opera House. Did the botanic garden, the bridge walk, a coffee in the Rocks, never touched public transport. Cannot imagine an easier port.
Did the Blue Mountains on the train. Caught the 8:02 from Central, at Katoomba by 10, saw the Three Sisters, back by mid afternoon. Long day and you have to watch the return trains, but the views were worth it.
Took the Manly ferry with the kids and honestly the ferry ride was the highlight, better than half the paid tours. Just tapped our card on, 30 mins across the harbour, beach at the other end. Cheap and brilliant.
Heads up, we were at White Bay not Circular Quay and there is NO train. Stood around a bit before grabbing an Uber to the quay, about 20 bucks. Fine once we got there but wish we'd known which terminal beforehand.
Lovely easy harbour walk from the ship but The Rocks has more hills and steps than I expected. Took it slow and sat with a view of the bridge for a while. Perfect day, just wear good shoes.
