Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Stavanger
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Book the express bus before boarding the ship; it sells out early.
Tender or Docked?
Most ships dock directly in Stavanger's city center, at Strandkaien. You walk off the gangway into the harbor-front area, with the old town and restaurants immediately in front of you.
How to Get Into Town
Walk 2-5 minutes to the Old Town from the city-center berth. Stavanger is one of Norway's most walkable cruise ports.
Main Attractions
Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) is the most Instagrammed image in Norway. For those who can't or won't hike, Gamle Stavanger and the Petroleum Museum make a rewarding city day.
How Much Time You Need
Stavanger city needs 4-5 hours; Pulpit Rock needs 8-9 hours of your port call. Trying to combine both on a standard call usually means cutting the hike short or missing a comfortable return.
Keep in Mind
The Pulpit Rock express bus sells out fast and cannot be bought on the day. Book online before the ship departs or as soon as you board.
Safety & Comfort
Norway is one of the safest countries in the world for independent travel. Language, navigation, and security are non-issues in Stavanger.

We booked the bus tickets the day we got on the ship and even then the early buses were sold out and we had to take a later one. That made the timing tighter than I'd liked. Got back with about an hour to spare. The view at the top is absolutely worth it but I was checking my watch from noon.
Decided on the day that the weather looked iffy and just stayed in Stavanger. Walked the old town, had a proper Norwegian fish soup for lunch, did the Petroleum Museum in the afternoon. Genuinely a satisfying day and no anxiety at all. I'll go back for the hike.
