Can you do this cruise port on your own?
IJmuiden
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Pre-book the museum that matters most and time the ferry return carefully.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock at IJmuiden, not Amsterdam. You need the cruise ferry or a shuttle coach to reach the city. The ferry is the better option: 80-100 min, comfortable, scenic.
How to Get Into Town
Ferry from IJmuiden to Amsterdam Central: 80-100 min, ~€25-35 round trip. The ship usually operates its own ferry. Coach transfers are slower (90-120 min each way).
Main Attractions
The canal district, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House are the headline draws. All three paid attractions require timed-entry booking well in advance.
How Much Time You Need
10+ hours is the minimum for a comfortable Amsterdam day. Under 9 hours makes the ferry transit very difficult to justify.
Keep in Mind
The Anne Frank House sells out months in advance. Book the moment tickets open (5 weeks ahead). Do not assume walk-up tickets exist.
Safety & Comfort
Amsterdam is very safe for independent cruise visitors. Bicycle traffic is the main hazard; stay on footpaths and look both ways before stepping into any lane.

The ferry was completely fine. We were at Amsterdam Central by 9:30am, walked the canal ring for two hours, went into the Rijksmuseum (pre-booked, no queue), and were back on the ferry by 4pm. Exactly enough time. The key is knowing the last ferry time before you step off the ship.
I skipped the ship ferry and took the local bus and train. Cheaper but took longer than I expected -- nearly 70 minutes with the connection wait. In hindsight I would just pay for the ship ferry. Amsterdam itself was brilliant. Did the Jordaan entirely on foot, found a canal-side cafe and sat there for an hour. That was the highlight.
Four of us, all Dutch speakers so we were comfortable. We went in April and the tulips were still out at Keukenhof. Worth the extra trip if you are there in spring. We did Amsterdam in the morning, grabbed the Keukenhof Express bus mid-afternoon, and were back with 90 minutes to spare. Perfect timing.
