We took the 8:40am train from Kiel, got to Hamburg by 10am, walked the entire HafenCity and Speicherstadt until about 2pm, had lunch near the Elbphilharmonie, caught the 3:15pm train back. Easy day. The hardest part was leaving.
Kids were fascinated by the Miniatur Wunderland, we had booked two weeks before the cruise. Spent 3 full hours in there. Honestly the best 22 euros I spent on the whole trip. That was really all we had time for in Hamburg given the train. Would do it again.
tried to do miniatur wunderland and the harbor and the reeperbahn all in one day. did not have pre-booked tickets for wunderland and they were full. wasted 30 minutes at the door before giving up. did the harbor instead. lesson learned.
