Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Puntarenas
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Worth doing independently, but logistics require advance planning.
Tender or Docked?
Puntarenas alternates between docking at Puerto Caldera (10 km south) and anchoring in the Gulf of Nicoya with tendering into Puntarenas town. Check your ship's app or daily newsletter the night before to confirm which applies to your call. Tender days add 30-90 minutes to your schedule.
How to Get Into Town
When tendering, the landing point is the Puntarenas Passenger Terminal in the center of town. When docked at Puerto Caldera, taxis and shuttles are arranged at the pier exit. Neither option puts you within walking distance of worthwhile destinations; all main attractions require organized ground transport.
Main Attractions
The Tarcoles Crocodile Bridge is 30-45 minutes away and delivers jaw-dropping wildlife for free. Carara National Park is adjacent and hosts scarlet macaws in season. Jaco Beach (45 min) is the go-to beach. Manuel Antonio National Park (1.5-2 hrs) is Costa Rica's most celebrated wildlife experience but needs a full port day.
How Much Time You Need
A typical 8-10 hour call fits Carara / Crocodile Bridge plus Jaco Beach, or Carara alone with more time exploring. Manuel Antonio requires 10+ hours in port and confident logistics.
Keep in Mind
Manuel Antonio National Park requires advance online reservations and caps daily visitor numbers. On cruise days, entry can sell out. Book before your sailing if you plan to visit.
Safety & Comfort
Use only official or verified private taxis and tour operators. Unofficial taxis at the pier area exist and should be avoided. Ask at the official taxi line or through your ship if uncertain.

Carara National Park with a local guide was outstanding. Saw five scarlet macaws, three species of monkey, a basilisk lizard, and a fer-de-lance snake that we would have walked right past. Guide cost $30 extra at the entrance. Worth every cent for the wildlife identification alone.
We tried to do Manuel Antonio on our own and almost missed the ship. The park entry ticket we bought online was for the wrong date, the taxi was delayed, and the drive back took 20 minutes longer than expected. Made it with 15 minutes to spare. Do NOT attempt Manuel Antonio without a pre-arranged driver and confirmed park tickets.
We negotiated a private driver at the pier for $80 for two of us, all day. Did Marigot Bay for photos, then Soufriere for Sulphur Springs and Diamond Waterfall, then stopped at a beach on the way back. Ship tour for the same route was $160 per person. Driver was excellent.
