Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Cartagena
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Start early, find shade by noon, and drink water constantly.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock at the dedicated cruise terminal, 3.5 km from the Old City. A taxi to the walled city takes 10-15 minutes; there is no need to tender.
How to Get Into Town
Taxi to the Walled City: 10-15 min, 37,000-50,000 COP (~$9-12 USD). Official fare boards are posted at the terminal exit; agree the price before getting in.
Main Attractions
The Walled City is the headline and it delivers. Castillo San Felipe adds history; Rosario Islands add Caribbean beaches if you have the time and a full port call.
How Much Time You Need
7+ hours is the comfortable minimum for the walled city and one extra stop. Rosario Islands require a 10+ hour port call and an early start.
Keep in Mind
The heat is relentless. Cartagena sits near the equator and temperatures reach 32-35 C (90-95 F) every single day, with humidity that makes it feel worse.
Safety & Comfort
The tourist zone is well-patrolled and generally safe during the day, with petty theft and vendor scams the primary concerns rather than violent crime.

We were in the walled city by 8am and it was already warm but manageable. By 11am the heat was serious. We'd finished the main plazas and the cathedral and retreated to a cafe in the shade. Perfect timing, actually. Go early.
Getsemani was my favorite part. The street art is extraordinary and it's much less manicured than the walled city. Felt like the actual neighborhood behind the tourist surface. Had breakfast at a place where a local family was eating at the next table. That was my Cartagena.
