Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Melbourne
DIY Score
Keep it simple
See Melbourne easily; the Twelve Apostles need a tour or an overnight.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at Station Pier. Ships berth about 3 km from the city, so a 560 m walk plus the 109 tram gets you to the centre.
How to Get Into Town
Tram 109 to the city: ~15 min, about A$5.70 day cap. From the pier it is a 560 m walk to the Beacon Cove stop, then a straight run into central Melbourne.
Main Attractions
Two very different days: Melbourne's laneways or the Great Ocean Road coast. The city is easy; the Twelve Apostles are a long haul best kept realistic.
How Much Time You Need
A full day, and the Twelve Apostles need more than that. Melbourne fills 4-6 hours easily; the far coast does not fit a normal call.
Keep in Mind
The Twelve Apostles are farther than they look. The full Great Ocean Road loop runs 12-14 hours, too long for most cruise days.
Safety & Comfort
One of the easiest ports anywhere for independent travel. Melbourne is safe, English-speaking and well signed.

Booked the ship's Great Ocean Road tour and glad we did. Long day on a coach but zero stress about the return. If you actually want the Apostles, I wouldn't try to DIY it in one day.
Walked the 560m to the tram at Beacon Cove, tapped on with the Myki we grabbed at the pier booth, into the city in about 15 min. Did Queen Vic Market and the botanic gardens, taxi back for $28. Easy port.
We thought we could drive to the Twelve Apostles and back in the day. Big mistake. Got as far as Apollo Bay, realised we would never make it back in time and turned around. Beautiful drive, but I spent the last two hours watching the clock instead of the coast.
honestly just took the tram into the city and wandered the laneways for a few hours. good coffee, cool street art, back at the ship by 4. didnt see any apostles and didnt care
My knees are not what they were so the coast tour was out. We stayed local, had a long lunch in Port Melbourne and sat by the beach near the pier watching the ships. Lovely relaxed day and no rushing.
