Varies by ship, usually tendered. Some ships tender to Komodo Island's Loh Liang wharf; others anchor off Labuan Bajo and reach the dragons by boat.
How to Get Into Town
No town, just the park: a ranger-led trek, pre-booked. Park fees run about IDR 650,000-900,000 per person, plus a ranger fee per group.
Main Attractions
Ranger-led dragon trekking on Komodo or Rinca, plus Padar and Pink Beach. The dragons are the whole point; pre-book and follow your ranger.
How Much Time You Need
A trek needs only 2-3 hours, but the logistics fill the call. Boats and quotas, not the walk, are the time sink, and the multi-island day assumes you tender to the islands, not anchor off Labuan Bajo.

A daily visitor quota and pre-booking now apply. From April 2026 the park caps entries, so arrange a slot before you sail.
Safety & Comfort
Safe with a ranger, remote without one. The dragons demand respect and there is little infrastructure.

Been to a lot of expedition ports and Komodo is one where I'd not fight the organised trip. Between the quota, the ranger and the boats, doing it truly solo is more hassle than it's worth now. We went with the arranged trek and it was seamless.
I'd built the dragons up in my head as this terrifying thing and honestly the ranger made it feel completely under control. That said, get your park booking sorted before you go, the quotas caught out a couple of people on our ship who couldn't get a slot.
We were on the medium trek when the ranger just stopped and pointed, and there it was, this enormous dragon flat out in the shade not ten feet off the path. Nobody breathed. It flicked its tongue and just watched us. I've never felt so small in my life.
Assumed we would just step off onto Komodo Island. Nope, our ship anchored at Labuan Bajo and it was a two hour speedboat each way. Barely 40 minutes with the dragons after all that. Amazing to see them but the boat legs were brutal.
Did the short trek with our two, and even that was hot and dusty for little legs. Rangers were brilliant with the kids though, showed them the nests and kept them a safe distance back. Bring more water than you think you need.
