We didnt fancy the long drive so we just did Hobart on foot and it was lovely. Salamanca on a Saturday, a coffee by the water, home by early afternoon. My husband's knee thanked us for not doing Port Arthur.
honestly just wandered around battery point and salamanca for the morning. nothing dramatic, just really pretty and easy. got a scallop pie and sat by the boats.
I went back and forth for days about whether to attempt Port Arthur independently. In the end I booked the shuttle so someone else owned the timing. Best decision, I actually relaxed instead of watching the clock the whole way home.
Rented a little car right in the city and drove out to Port Arthur ourselves. Left side of the road took me about ten minutes to stop panicking about. Site is genuinely worth it, gave ourselves a huge buffer and were back with time to spare.
Did Port Arthur with two kids and it was a big day. The harbour cruise bit kept them happy and there's loads of space to run around the ruins, but they were flat by the drive home. Pack snacks for the road.
