Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Gdansk
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Leave Gdansk 90 minutes before all-aboard and prioritize the Old Town.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked in Gdynia, not Gdansk. Ships berth at the Gdynia cruise quay; Gdansk Old Town is 20 km away and reached by SKM commuter train.
How to Get Into Town
SKM train from Gdynia Glowna to Gdansk: 35 min, 9.60 PLN. Add 15-20 minutes each way to walk from the ship to the station.
Main Attractions
Medieval Long Market, amber markets on Mariacka Street, and two of Europe's most powerful history museums. Gdansk rewards self-guided exploration and the Old Town is compact enough to cover on foot.
How Much Time You Need
9+ hours ideal. Transit alone takes about 2 hours round trip; shorter calls barely leave enough time in Gdansk to do the Old Town justice.
Keep in Mind
Your ship docks in Gdynia, not Gdansk. Most cruisers figure this out on the ship's map, but it catches people who assume the Old Town is a short walk from the pier.
Safety & Comfort
Safe and easy to navigate. Gdansk is a popular tourist city with low crime; English is widely spoken in the Old Town and at the train stations.

Third time here. Just do the Old Town and skip the stress of getting to the museums. Long Market in the morning with a coffee, Mariacka Street, St Mary's, then back to the ship for lunch. Perfect couple of hours and you still feel like you've seen Gdansk properly.
The WWII Museum was powerful but absolutely exhausting with kids. We spent nearly three hours and the children were done long before us. Worth every minute, but I would not take under-10s in there and expect them to cope.
We almost missed the ship because I miscalculated the return. The train is 35 minutes but then there's the walk back to the quay in Gdynia, and we had to sprint the last bit. Ninety minutes before all-aboard is the minimum. I would say two hours.
Didn't realize we were docking in Gdynia, not Gdansk. Had planned an easy five-minute walk to the old town. Once we sorted the train it was fine, but it cost us about an hour at the start. Read the ship's daily newsletter more carefully next time.
Mariacka Street on a sunny morning was genuinely lovely. Not touristy in an unpleasant way. I bought a small piece of amber from a jeweler who'd been there for twenty years. Spent maybe 45 minutes just walking up and down before actually seeing anything else.
