Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Bora Bora
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Book a lagoon tour or ride to Matira Beach; the water is the prize.
Tender or Docked?
Always tendered into Vaitape. The village has shops and a market but no beach, so plan a shuttle or a booked lagoon tour before you step off.
How to Get Into Town
You tender straight into Vaitape, but the nearest beach is a short bus or taxi ride. Matira Beach is about 15 minutes south.
Main Attractions
The lagoon is the headline: snorkeling with rays and reef sharks on a boat tour. Matira Beach is the easy self-guided alternative.
How Much Time You Need
A half-day lagoon tour plus a little beach time fits a standard call comfortably.
Keep in Mind
The lagoon is the whole point, and it needs a booked boat. Sort your tour before the cruise day.
Safety & Comfort
Bora Bora is very safe and relaxed, with the main considerations being sun, water comfort, and arranging transport.
Tips from Cruisers
"We booked a local boat tour weeks before, not the ship one, and it was the best money we spent all cruise. Standing waist deep wit…" — by Sofia R.
We booked a local boat tour weeks before, not the ship one, and it was the best money we spent all cruise. Standing waist deep with stingrays gliding past and little blacktip sharks circling, the water this impossible blue. I keep coming back to that morning. Half the price of the ship excursion too.
Nobody warned me how brutal the sun is out on that lagoon boat. Zero shade for three hours. The snorkeling was genuinely incredible but by the last stop I was cooked, bright red, and honestly just wanted to be back on the ship in the air conditioning.
took the little five dollar shuttle to matira beach and just stayed there all day. swam, had a beer, swam again. no tour no fuss. paradise doesnt need an itinerary
Kids loved the shark and ray snorkel but our youngest got nervous in the deeper water, so one of us stayed in the shallows with her. Bring reef shoes and lots of sunscreen, there is zero shade on the boat. Great day but plan for the little ones.
The tender was calm and easy, no drama at all. We are not big swimmers so we did the beach and a slow drive around the island in a little rental. Otemanu from every angle is something else. Did not feel we needed the boat tour to enjoy it.
