Always tendered into Port of Airlie. Ships anchor in Pioneer Bay and run boats ashore, a 10-15 minute ride, landing a short walk from town.
How to Get Into Town
Walk to town in about 10 minutes, free. The marquee sights are boat tours from the marina, roughly AUD $150-250 for the day.
Main Attractions
Whitehaven Beach and the reef are the headline, both by boat. In town, the free lagoon and esplanade are the easy wins.
How Much Time You Need
A full-day reef or Whitehaven tour needs the whole call. Town and the lagoon fill 2-3 relaxed hours.
Keep in Mind
A full-day boat tour barely fits a cruise call. If you book one independently, choose a half-day option and leave a big margin.

Whitehaven really is that white. We took the ship’s tour so the timing was handled for us, which was worth it. Getting on and off the tender was the only tricky bit for my hip.
We did a half-day Whitehaven tour and I still spent the last hour watching the clock as we motored back. Made it with time to spare but I would not do the full-day version off a tender port.
didnt bother with a boat, just walked into town, swam in the lagoon, had fish and chips on the esplanade. cheap and lovely and no stress
The lagoon was perfect for the kids, netted and safe with lifeguards. We saved the reef for another trip. Sometimes the simple option is the right one on a port day.
Tender queue coming back was a shambles, close to an hour. If you go on any tour, get an early one back. We nearly didn’t make it.
