Keep it simple

Stay local for penguins or the town; the towers need a longer stop.

Tender or Docked?

Varies by ship, and often tendered. Smaller expedition ships dock at Arturo Prat pier; larger ones anchor in the Strait and tender in, about 10 minutes to a central pier.

How to Get Into Town

Town is a 15-20 min walk from the pier, free. Arturo Prat pier sits in the centre, so most people simply walk to Plaza Munoz Gamero.

Main Attractions

Penguins by boat, a walkable frontier town, and a far-off national park. Magdalena Island and central Punta Arenas fit a cruise day; Torres del Paine mostly does not.

How Much Time You Need

A half to full day covers the town and penguins. The national park needs 12-16 hours and does not fit a standard call.

Keep in Mind

The W-Trek is a 4-5 day hike, not a day trip. No cruise call is long enough, so do not plan to walk the W from the ship.

Safety & Comfort

A calm, low-crime port. Punta Arenas is small, walkable and safe by day; weather is the real hazard.
